Reading Intent Statement

Reading is the heartbeat of our curriculum: it is a core life skill that opens up a world of opportunities. Indeed, from the minute children enter our school, they are immersed in a world of storytelling, books and texts to access places, concepts and ideas that they may never encounter in everyday life.

We strive for all children to read fluently, with expression and confidence, a wide variety of high-quality, rich literature. In addition, children will develop the core skills of comprehension (including a focus on vocabulary, inference, prediction, explanation, retrieval and summarising) enabling them to have a full understanding of the texts they read.

We foster a love of reading from the Early Years right through to Year 6 so that all children leave Wootton able to read for pleasure, read for curiosity and read for purpose.

“The more that you read, the more that you will know.  The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.”   Dr Seuss
